Augmented Sixth (Ger⁺⁶)

the classical shape-shifter

A predominant chord built on b6 whose outer voices form an augmented sixth, both resolving outward by half step onto 5. The German variety contains the exact pitches of a dominant 7th spelled differently — so one chord can be read two ways and exit into two different keys. Schubert's documented trapdoor, and the theory behind the b6⁷ push.
