When the progression parks in the relative minor — an Axis Sad Start, a Scarborough vamp — you can shade the minor two ways. Natural minor is the default; Dorian raises its 6th and the gloom gets a window. If the changes include the major 2 chord in the minor (Scarborough's signature), Dorian isn't optional — that raised 6th is the note making the chord major.
