The Master Key

chord tones first — the scale is the neighborhood

All of the above compresses to one rule: the tonic's seventh chooses the scale. A 1Δ⁷ tonic points to Ionian or Lydian; a 1⁷ tonic points to Mixolydian and the blues scale; a 1-⁷ tonic points to minor pentatonic or Dorian. Then refine per chord: target chord tones on the strong beats and let the scale fill the space between them. Practice loop: pick any progression card above, drone the tonic, and play each scale over it for a full minute — your ear will file the verdicts faster than any chart.

watch outNo scale rescues a line with no target notes. Chord tones are the destinations; scales are just the streets.
